According to a report issued by the ECLAC, Chile rose from 4th to 3rd place among the top countries receiving Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). In 2006, FDI entering Latin American and the Caribbean reached US$ 72.44 billion. This figure suggests a stability of investment flows in the region following a significant fall at the beginning of this decade.
The top countries receiving FDI in Latin America were Mexico (US$18.94 billion), Brazil (US$18.78 billion), and Chile (US$ 8.05 billion), outperforming Colombia by almost US$2 billion. In terms of the FDI to GDP ratio, the 2006 ranking was lead by Panama (16.4%), followed by Trinidad and Tobago (8.4%), Uruguay (8.3%), Costa Rica (7%), and Chile (6.9%).
Despite recent investment diversification, most investments originate in the United States and other developed countries. In 2006, however, investments from countries like Switzerland and Canada emerged strongly in the region.
