UNCTAD: Foreign direct investment in Chile exceeds US$ 14 billion in 2007

Global foreign direct investment (FDI) soared by 30% in 2007, reaching a record US$ 1.833 billion, according to the "World Investment Report 2008", published by UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development).

Two-thirds of this investment was made in Asia, one-fourth in Latin America and the Caribbean, and one-tenth in Africa.

The report reveals that FDI made in Latin America and the Caribbean rose 36%, reaching a total of US$ 126 billion. Brazil (US$ 35 billion), Mexico (US$ 25 billion), and Chile (US$ 14.5 billion) were the countries with the highest investment rates.

During the first semester of 2008, Chile accumulated US$ 9.5 billion in FDI, 40% more compared to the same quarter in 2007. In 2006, domestic FDI reached a total of US$ 7.4 billion.
