World Bank: Chile leads Latin America in ranking for doing business
Published: October 27, 2008

Chile is 40th in the global Doing Business 2009 ranking, published yearly by the World Bank. The country dropped from its 36 spot in 2008 in the absence of major progress or backsliding in reform favorable to business.

Chile ranks above nations like Spain (49), Italy (65), and the Czech Republic (75). The Latin American countries ranked behind Chile are Colombia (53) Mexico (56), Peru (62), Panama (81), and Argentina (113).

Doing Business ranks 181 economies based on 10 indicators of business regulation that record the time and cost to meet government requirements in starting and operating a business, trading across borders, paying taxes, and closing a business. The rankings do not reflect such areas as macroeconomic policy, quality of infrastructure, currency volatility, investor perceptions, or crime rates.
