The Chilean Economic Development Agency (CORFO) will carry out a series of activities to enhance Chile's participation at the event, which will be held in China.
At the beginning of October, Hernán Somerville, Chile's Commissioner-General for Expo Shanghai 2010, and Carlos Álvarez, the Executive Vice-President of CORFO, signed a document of understanding which establishes CORFO as the official sponsor of the Chile Pavilion at Expo Shanghai 2010.
In its role of promoting the country's economic development, CORFO will carry out a series of activities to enhance Chile's participation at the event in Shanghai. These will include the organization of business promotion events for sectors with potential for development, and the distribution of promotional material.
The Asia Pacific region is prioritized within the policy to promote foreign investment in Chile, especially for the country's development as a business platform between the region and Latin America. Accordingly, the Chile Pavilion at Shanghai Expo will provide a platform for CORFO to promote Chile's advantages and investment opportunities, as well as to strengthen diplomatic, commercial, economic and cultural ties with China and the wider region.
The Commissioner-General expressed his pleasure with the agreement and indicated that, "these understandings and commitments invigorate the mission entrusted to us by President Bachelet, which involves enhancing all the benefits that a healthy, prestigious and open economy such as ours has to offer the world, and revealing the extraordinary investment opportunities and strong trade links with Asia and Latin America."
The Executive Vice-President of CORFO highlighted, "the opportunity for Chile to present its business and investment opportunities, as well as promote alliances between national and Asian companies, in particular Chinese firms."
China is Chile's second largest trading partner, with more than US$16 billion of trade in 2008, and the government is working hard to radically increase opportunities for commercial exchange between the two countries.
